A lot of new people I've played with don't really "get it" on how much damage they deal. They use large lasers or mediums and never really feel like they're doing much damage, or never really know how much they're doing.

People who know the actual damage numbers of weapons and have played for a very long time get the feeling for how much damage they've dealt, so this isn't for you.

For new players though, I recommend floating damage text. Any time you first damage an enemy and for 3 seconds afterwards all your damage done to that target adds up in to a number. After 3 seconds from the first hit that number starts to flat upwards and a new number will appear if you do additional damage. This will let players get a good feel for how much damage they're doing over time.

I really think MWO could benefit from this. MWO desperately needs more playability updates, and the ability to visually see just how much damage you're dealing is a big deal for many players.

I know people that play this game, especially those on the forums, generally hate anything that makes this game more open and easy to play and are filled with rage at the thought of anyone new playing mechwarrior, but ... well I guess that says it all.

MWO is going for a Simulator-like experience.

Floating combat text is great but doesn't work with what they are going for.

so have an option to turn it off.

damage numbers are incredibly common in pretty much much every game now. Even natural selection has them. They do nothing but make the game easier for new players.

Well then no Mechwarrior has ever had floating numbers so I guess we're good.

Because that's how it was in the other games and we are not going to change things just because of your perceived idea on making it easier on players who've never played.

In all seriousness, because it'd have to look like it fit in and at the current moment it wouldn't. Could I see an option for it in the future or some such? Possibly. I just think other options might solve the solution more then just showing the numbers. You know such things as a proper tutorial or at the least a better mechlab(oh hey that's coming so it's a start..)
Admittedly it might solve people trying to peg me at 1k with a PPC and doing one damage.

Also, interesting name.

PPCs + LRMs for new players would be easier to understand. Machine guns/flamers would be easier to understand. Pulse lasers versus normal players, ER weapons, etc.

Too much information would be distracting to the pilots. Besides, since lasers are DoT weapons that hit multiple spots (and missles splash) it would be impossible to do properly.

Until they fix machine guns and flamers, those weapons should having float 'text' that says, "Ur a dumbass".

Although I don't support the idea, it is doable even for missiles that hit multiple locations and lasers that do damage over time.

Front Mission 3, such a fun game.

It's all fun and games until a machine gunning spider rakes your exposed cockpit.

YES! And also add the XP pop ups for when you get XP, and a level up bonus for when you clear enough XP for the next tier.

And in one of the unused display screens, we can have a list of all the team members total damage and dps numbers, as well as damage taken to see who is soaking the most hits.

Great idea OP!
